Michael Shoemaker

[via: MyFoxDC]
Michael E. Shoemaker was arrested in Maryland this weekend, along with his son and father. I do not condone violence or other illegal activity in any way, but when I saw this mugshot, I knew it was too awesome to pass up.

Walt Whitman

"I have heard what the talkers were talking, the talk of the beginning and the end
But I do not talk of the beginning or the end.
There was never any more inception than there is now,
Nor any more youth or age than there is now,
And will never be any more perfection than there is now,
Nor any more heaven or hell than there is now."
-excerp from Song of Myself, III

I was first introduced to Whitman in my 11th grade English class. Song of Myself was the first poem we read while studying Transcendentalism, and I immediately fell in love. He makes me want to run away to the forest and write poetry and grow a beard and forget about the busy world around me.

One of the more famous faces of the Old Wild West, Buffalo Bill was an American soldier, bison hunter and showman. His unique facial hair, later worn by Colonel Sanders, definitely suits him.

Alexi Lalas

I was channel surfing today and happened to come across some ESPN newscasters discussing Alexi Lalas' beard back in the 90's. While doing some research I didn't even recognize him! I'm used to seeing the clean-shaven Lalas at press conferences for the LA Galaxy. Anyway, the people attending must have been surprised that security didn't remove the homeless man running around on the pitch.

Charles Darwin

[VIA: goecuador]
The key to Darwin's successful scientific career? The Beard, duh. It really has perfect dimensions to classify him as a serious scientist: long, white, and just mismanaged enough to add a hint of eccentricity.

Abraham Lincoln

[via: eHow]
Abraham Lincoln, Honest Abe, the 16th president of the United States of America. Most famous for his beard, top hat, and being the tallest president at 6'4"...oh, and of course freeing the slaves. I'm not sure who the other two men in this photograph are, but they also have some pretty nice beards!

Beard Alphabet

[via: timbeck@livejournal]
While these are not actual people's beards, I stumbled upon it today and felt that it needs to be shared. Some of the beards are normal, but others are ridiculous, so if you have any such as H, M, N, R, or S you should send me a picture!

Devendra Banhart

[via: aimestreet.com]
There are plenty of pictures of Banhart that don't have a burlesque theme, but I thought this one was just too perfect to pass up. I'm sorry to report that as of January 27, 2009, Banhart's beard is no more [check out the difference]. I stumbled across this old article on Stereogum and literally gasped.

Let's all take this time for a brief moment of silence.

[Phoenix] "In what way?"
[Letterman] "Well is it comfortable? Is it itchy? Are you pleased with it?"
